CWA Shares with Local Students

Kids love to learn. And when the subject is as interesting as water, you just know they’re going to have a great time finding out all kinds of fascinating tidbits.

With that in mind, CWA is continuing its outreach education program by going to schools in its service area and bringing the information right to the classroom. The program has been developed by CWA specifically for grades three through six and has proven to be an exciting addition to the normal school curriculum.

With conservation and water quality concerns so much a part of our world, CWA created the program to help the younger generation learn how CWA deals with these issues today so they can be better equipped to respond to future environmental challenges as adults.

The program begins with a visually exciting production, “Down the Drain,” which was developed by the Children’s Television Network and the American Water Works Association. The video is narrated by a 12-year-old girl who takes the children through the water cycle while discussing pollution, conservation, and a variety of scientific water facts. These include how much water the average person uses per day (approximately 120 gallons) and how the water being used today is the same water that has existed on earth since the time of the dinosaurs––and before.

The students then learn about Chester Water Authority through a slide show that covers the treatment plant, the pumping and booster stations, and the main building, and adds information about career opportunities in the water industry, as well as the importance of education and the ability to use computers.

Of course, no school presentation would be complete without goodie bags––and CWA certainly takes care of that. The youngsters are given water-related coloring books, stickers, pens, rulers, and a map of the Authority’s distribution area.

CWA also offers tours of our treatment plant. For more information, please call (717) 529-2244.  If you think your child’s school may be interested in an in-school presentation, please call CWA Human Resources for more information at (610) 876-8185.
