When
you’re 137 years old, you have a lot of memories! CWA is
celebrating our long history with a display of unique
artifacts and historic documents. The display is on
view during office hours in the lobby of our Main Building at 415 Welsh Street in the City of
Chester. The exhibits will be updated periodically.
Here are some
highlights of our current exhibit: The oldest items are an 1877
receipt for 16 feet of water main and a water bill receipt from
1878. On display now is a copy of the 1699 plan for the City of
Chester, along with photos circa 1927 depicting our former
garages at Front and Fulton Streets as well as workers using
donkeys and carts for transport. We even have a section of
cast-iron water main dating from 1887!
Preparing Your Water Service for Cold Weather
•
Disconnect all hoses from outside faucets.
•
Insulate or wrap all pipes and faucets in
unheated areas (especially in a crawl space or garage, under
an open porch, or in a cabinet against an uninsulated
outside wall).
•
Before leaving your property for more than
two days, turn off the water by closing the main shut-off
valve on your property.
•
Close all windows and garage doors near water
pipes.
•
Check how to find your master shut-off valve
so you can turn it off if a pipe leaks.
•
If you have had problems in the past, when
the temperature becomes severely cold let the water in the
affected pipe run about half the diameter of a wooden
pencil.
•
Make sure you have the telephone number of a
reliable plumber.
•
If your meter freezes, call CWA at
800-793-2323 or 610-876-8181.
