Where Does Your Water Come From?

The water you receive is treated, purified, and pumped to you from the CWA Octoraro Treatment Plant. In 2004, this facility produced an average of 34 million gallons of drinking water each day.

The water treated at the Octoraro Treatment Plant comes from two sources:

the Octoraro Reservoir on the Octoraro Creek, and the Conowingo Pool of the Susquehanna River. Both of these sources are in the Susquehanna River Basin.

In 2004, 86 percent of the water we treated was from the Octoraro Reservoir, and 14 percent was from the Conowingo Pool of the Susquehanna River. The Susquehanna source was used primarily in January, February, and September.

We are committed to providing you with clean drinking water at all times, and the upgrades at the Octoraro Treatment Plant are part of that commitment. In the spring of 2006, we will begin several capital improvement projects.  Please see the article “Octoraro Treatment Plant Projects” for more information.

Curious about conservation? Wondering about your water? CWA goes to schools, community groups, retirement residences, and other organizations in our service area with answers, information, and activities. Our goal is to raise awareness of the importance of protecting your water, our precious natural resource. For example, CWA visits schools to teach children about water with fun, hands-on activities, including the water version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

It’s important that our customers know that clean drinking water doesn’t happen by magic; it takes a team of experienced, dedicated people. At CWA, we’re proud of our history, our water, and our plans for the future, and we enjoy talking about our water with our customers.
