Cold
Weather Tips...
The
coldest days of winter are quickly approaching, and that
means freezing temperatures that can affect your water
supply.Taking
a few simple precautions now can make all the difference
in preventing your pipes from freezing and possibly
bursting.Chester
Water Authority recommends that you take the following
steps today to help safeguard your water supply:
·
Disconnect all
hoses from
outside faucets.
·
Insulate or
wrap all pipes and faucets in unheated areas (especially
in your crawlspace or garage, under an open porch, or in a cabinet that is against an
uninsulated outside wall).
·
Close
all windows and garage doors near water pipes.
·
Check
now to find your master shut-off valve so you can turn it
off if a pipe leaks.
·
If
you have had problems in the past when the temperature has
fallen below 15ºF, just let the water in the affected
pipe run so the flow is about half the diameter of a
wooden pencil.This
will keep your water pipe from freezing and may save you a
lot of trouble.
·
Make
sure you have the telephone number of a reliable plumber.
Conserving
Water = Lower Water Bill
Toilet leaks are the number-one water
waster in the home and can account for an unusually high
water bill.If
you have a toilet leaking 1/8 of a gallon per minute, you
waste 180 gallons every day.For a leak of this size, you will pay over $16 a
month for water that was wasted. If you suspect that your toilet is leaking, Chester
Water Authority will send you a color dye kit, at no
cost to you, which will help you test for a
leak.This
kit will easily show you if you have a leak, even if the
leak is a slow one.
