Rehabilitation
Project Proceeds on Schedule
The major Chester Water
Authority project to upgrade water mains, hydrants, and meters in
Chester and Nether Providence Township continues to meet its
timetable.
The
$500,000, three-month project is upgrading a mile of water mains.
Included are the removal of lead linings, the cleaning and cement
lining of six-inch water mains, and the renewing of two-inch- to
four-inch-diameter ductile iron cement lined (DICL) water mains.
In addition, seven fire hydrants are being renewed.
In
order to complete work on the mains, CWA sets up temporary by-pass
piping above ground. This by-pass piping is tested regularly and
does not affect water quality or service.
Since
1974, the Authority has rehabilitated over 35 miles of water mains
at a total expenditure of approximately $15 million.
Hydrant
work will increase hydraulic capacity and serve as a boost to fire
fighting. At the same time, CWA is installing 135 automatic meter
reading devices (AMRs) in these areas. With AMRs, our meter
readers can determine water usage without needing access inside
buildings.
