Susquehanna Pumping Station Undergoes Major
Upgrades
As part of the Authority’s ongoing program to help CWA insure
your water keeps flowing without interruption, several significant
improvements are being made to the CWA Susquehanna Raw Water
Pumping Station.
The Susquehanna Pumping Station withdraws water from the
Conowingo Pool of the Susquehanna River and pumps this water
either to the Octoraro Reservoir or directly to the Octoraro
Treatment Plant. It is a "raw water" pumping station,
which means it pumps untreated water to the treatment plant for
processing.
One of the most important upgrades will be the addition of a
third pump. This pump will have a capacity of 15 million gallons
per day (MGD). The upgraded Station will be able to pump 30 MGD
even if one pump is out of service. Presently, the station has two
vertical turbine pumps, each of which can pump 15 MGD.
During drought conditions, continuous operation of the
Susquehanna Station is essential. This third pumping unit will
give us the backup that is critical to being able to provide all
of our customers the water they need.
In addition, all of the station’s electrical switchgear and
motor controls are being replaced with new equipment with current
technology.
The SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system at
the Octoraro Treatment Plant will also be expanded so that the
Susquehanna Station can be remotely operated and monitored from
the Octoraro Treatment Plant.
